Phils' starter Kyle Kendrick and the Mets Jon Niese each pitched a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second, Jason Bay led off with a double to right field. David Wright followed with a home run to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. Ike Davis grounded out to second baseman Chase Utley and a home run by Jeff Francoeur ensued. Kendrick retired Rod Barajas and Niese to close out the inning. The Phils had runners on first and third base with one out in the bottom half. Carlos Ruiz singled to score Jayson Werth. Niese then set down Kendrick and Shane Victorino on outfield fly balls for the final outs.
Neither team scored in the third and fourth innings. In the top of the fifth, Barajas led off with a home run. Kendrick struck out Niese and gave up a double to Angel Pagan. A ground out by Luis Castillo moved Pagan to third and Jose Reyes popped out to third baseman Placido Polanco. Niese recorded two strikeouts in a perfect bottom of the inning. Phillies' reliever Danys Baez retired the Mets in order in the top of the sixth. Niese then pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.
Francoeur was hit by a pitch and stole second base to begin the top of the seventh inning. A double by Barajas scored Francoeur for the Mets' fifth run. Baez walked Niese and yielded a two-run triple to Pagan. With one out, Reyes singled off the Phils' David Herndon to bring home Pagan for an 8-1 Mets lead. Bay hit a grounder to Polanco for an inning-ending double play. Niese then held Philadelphia to a leadoff single by Werth in the bottom half.
Herndon pitched a 1-2-3 top of the eighth. Mets' reliever Jenrry Mejia held the Phillies scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Against reliever Brad Lidge, Barajas hit his second home run of the game to start the top of the ninth. Pagan got a one-out single and Lidge was replaced on the mound by J. C. Romero. Castillo reached base on an error by shortstop Juan Castro. Romero then recorded outs on the next two Met batters to end the inning.
Mets' reliever Manny Acosta retired Werth on a grounder to shortstop Reyes to begin the bottom of the ninth. Raul Ibanez singled and Castro lined out to center fielder Pagan. Ruiz drew a walk to keep the Phils' slim chances alive. Acosta then got pinch-hitter Ross Gload on a game-ending fly ball to right fielder Gary Matthews. The Mets had their eight consecutive victory with a solid display of slugging.
