Mets’ starter Bob Ojeda then retired Tito Landrum on a ground ball to Teufel for the third out.

After scoreless second and third innings, Kevin Mitchell led off the top of the fourth with a game-tying home run. Teufel grounded out to third baseman Terry Pendleton and a single by Keith Hernandez ensued. Gary Carter reached second base (with Hernandez moving to third) on an error by shortstop Smith. Darryl Strawberry grounded out to first baseman Clark to score Hernandez and send Carter to third. George Foster hit a single to bring home Carter for a 3-1 Mets lead. Tudor then got Ray Knight to fly out to center fielder McGee and finish off the inning.

McGee homered to begin the bottom of the fourth. Landrum flied out to Dykstra and a single by Pendleton followed. Pendleton stole second base and Mike Heath grounded out to Ojeda. Tudor flied out to right fielder Strawberry to end the inning and Mitchell got a two-out single in the top of the fifth. Teufel slugged a two-run homer to extend the Mets’ lead to 5-2. Tudor retired Hernandez on an inning-ending fly ball to McGee. Ojeda then held the Cardinals to a double by Herr in the bottom half.

Ojeda and Tudor each pitched scoreless ball in the sixth and seventh. With one out in the top of the eighth, St. Louis reliever Todd Worrell hit Teufel with a pitch. Hernandez was retired on a foul pop-up to Pendleton. Carter grounded out to Pendleton to end the inning and Clark homered for the Cards’ third run with one out in the bottom half. McGee hit a single and Landrum grounded to shortstop Rafael Santana for an inning-ending double play. The Mets then failed to score after loading the bases against Worrell in the top of the ninth.
