The Mets faced the Dodgers on a Monday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the makeup of a game postponed by snow from fifteen days earlier. Matt Franco hit a run-scoring single in the ninth inning for a 1-0 Mets win over Los Angeles.
Pat Mahomes and the Dodgers’ Darren Dreifort each pitched two innings of one-hit scoreless ball to start the game. Mahomes hurled a perfect top of the third and Rickey Henderson singled with two outs in the bottom half. Derek Bell hit a single and Edgardo Alfonzo drew a walk to load the bases. Dreifort then retired Mike Piazza on a fly ball to left fielder Gary Sheffield for the third out of the inning.
Mahomes set down the side in order in the top of the fourth. Dreifort gave up only a double to Todd Zeile in the bottom half and Todd Hundley hit a one-out single in the top of the fifth. Adrian Beltre drew a walk and Kevin Elster flied out to right fielder Bell. Dreifort grounded back to Mahomes to close out the inning and yielded a single to Pat to begin the bottom half. Henderson followed with a force play ground ball to third baseman Beltre. Dreifort then got Bell to hit a grounder to shortstop Elster for an inning-ending double play.
Mahomes and Mets’ reliever Dennis Cook combined for a scoreless top of the sixth. Dreifort surrendered just a walk to Alfonzo in the bottom half and Eric Karros walked to open the top of the seventh. Hundley singled and Cook was replaced on the mound by New York’s Turk Wendell. A sacrifice bunt by Beltre advanced the runners to second and third base. Elster went down on strikes and pinch-hitter Dave Hansen drew a walk to load the bases. Wendell retired Devon White on a foul pop-up to catcher Piazza to finish off the inning. Los Angeles reliever Terry Adams then set down all three batters on infield ground balls in the bottom half.
Wendell pitched a perfect top of the eighth. Adams retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and Mets’ reliever Armando Benitez hurled a scoreless top of the ninth. Robin Ventura hit a leadoff double in the bottom half. Jon Nunnally drew a walk and Jay Payton reached on a fielder’s choice grounder to load the bases. Rey Ordonez followed with a ground ball on which Elster threw to catcher Hundley for an out at home on pinch-runner Melvin Mora. Franco came to bat and delivered a single to bring home Nunnally with the winning run. The Mets had emerged with a victory.
