The Mets faced the Diamondbacks on a Friday night at Citi Field. The teams played the opener of a three-game series. Mike Pelfrey and two relievers teamed up for a five-hitter in a 4-1 Mets win over Arizona.

Chris Young hit a triple to lead off the top of the first inning. Kelly Johnson drew a walk and Pelfrey retired the next three batters to end the inning. Diamondbacks’ starter Joe Saunders gave up only a single to Jose Reyes in the bottom half and Ryan Roberts walked to begin the top of the second. Pelfrey set down the next trio of D’Backs hitters and Jason Bay doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning. Ike Davis went down on strikes and Mike Nickeas drew a walk. Saunders then struck out Jason Pridie to finish off the inning.

Young reached on an error by third baseman David Wright to open the top of the third. With Johnson at bat, Young was caught stealing on catcher Nickeas’s throw to shortstop Reyes. Johnson hit a double and scored on Justin Upton’s double for a 1-0 Arizona lead. Pelfrey got Stephen Drew to fly out to right fielder Carlos Beltran and retired Miguel Montero on an inning-ending line drive to center fielder Pridie. Saunders then set down the side in order in the bottom half.

Pelfrey and Saunders each pitched scoreless ball from the fourth inning to the sixth. Mike yielded only a double to Russell Branyan while Saunders surrendered only a walk to Beltran. Pelfrey limited the Snakes to a single by Gerardo Parra in the top of the seventh. Wright drew a walk against Saunders to open the bottom of the inning. Diamondbacks’ reliever Esmerling Vasquez got Beltran to pop out to second baseman Johnson and fanned Bay as Wright stole second base. Davis followed with a home run to put the Mets ahead, 2-1. Nickeas singled and Pridie drew a walk. Vasquez then retired pinch-hitter Willie Harris on a fly ball to left fielder Parra for the inning’s third out.

Mets’ reliever Jason Isringhausen pitched a perfect top of the eighth. Reyes reached on an error by Arizona reliever Juan Gutierrez to lead off the bottom half. Daniel Murphy singled and a passed ball by catcher Montero advanced the runners to second and third base. Wright drew a walk to load the bases and Beltran singled to score Reyes for a 3-1 Mets lead. Bay was struck out and the Snakes’ Joe Paterson retired Davis on a pop-up to third baseman Roberts. Nickeas reached on Roberts’ error that allowed Murphy to come home with the Mets’ fourth run of the game. Paterson then got Pridie to pop out to shortstop Drew and end the inning.

Mets’ reliever Francisco Rodriguez retired Montero on a ground ball to first baseman Davis to start the top of the ninth. Roberts drew a walk and moved to second base on defensive indifference. Rodriguez then fanned both Branyan and Parra for the game’s final outs. The Mets had a victory to begin the weekend series.
