The Mets faced the Giants on a Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. The teams played the second of four games in an overlapping weekend series. The Mets scored on error in the ninth inning for a 5-4 win over San Francisco.

Mike Pelfrey and the Giants’ Ryan Vogelsong each pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. Angel Pagan doubled with two outs in the top of the third. Melky Cabrera drew a walk and Pablo Sandoval singled to drive home Pagan for a 1-0 San Francisco lead. Pelfrey retired Buster Posey on a ground ball to shortstop Ruben Tejada for the inning’s third out. Vogelsong then set down the Mets in order in the bottom half.

Pelfrey hurled a perfect top of the fourth. Vogelsong gave up just a double to Daniel Murphy in the bottom of the inning and Pelfrey held the Giants to a single by Pagan in the top of the fifth. Lucas Duda drew a walk to open the bottom half. Josh Thole hit a single to advance Duda to third base. Tejada followed with a force play ground ball to shortstop Brandon Crawford that scored Duda with the tying run. Pelfrey’s sacrifice bunt moved Tejada to second. Vogelsong then got Kirk Nieuwenhuis to ground out to Crawford and finish off the inning.

After a scoreless sixth, Pelfrey yielded only a single to Emmanuel Burris in the top of the seventh. Jason Bay hit a leadoff single in the bottom half. Duda drew a walk and Thole’s sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third base. Tejada hit a double to bring home Bay and Duda for a 3-1 Mets lead. Pelfrey was retired on a line drive to right fielder Nate Schierholtz. Vogelsong then got Nieuwenhuis to pop out to third baseman Sandoval and end the inning.

Pelfrey pitched a perfect top of the eighth. Murphy singled against Giants’ reliever Javier Lopez to lead off the bottom half. David Wright reached on first baseman Aubrey Huff’s error that sent Murphy to third base. Ike Davis singled to score Murphy and lengthen the Mets’ lead to 4-1. With Bay at bat against San Francisco’s Dan Otero, Davis was caught by catcher Posey’s pickoff throw to Huff. Wright was caught stealing third on a throw by Posey to Sandoval. Otero then retired Bay on a grounder to Crawford to close out the inning.

Posey singled against Mets’ reliever Frank Francisco to begin the top of the ninth. Huff grounded out to Francisco and a walk to Schierholtz ensued. Burris hit a single to drive home Posey and New York’s Tim Byrdak struck out pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez. Against the Mets’ Jon Rauch, pinch-hitter Brandon Belt doubled to score Schierholtz and Burris for a 4-4 tie. Rauch then fanned Pagan for the inning’s final out.

Duda hit a single against Giants’ reliever Clay Hensley to lead off the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice bunt by Thole moved pinch-runner Scott Hairston to second base and Tejada drew a walk. Pinch-hitter Justin Turner singled against San Francisco’s Jeremy Affeldt to load the bases. Nieuwenhuis followed with a ground ball on which first baseman Belt made a throw to Posey for an out at home on Hairston. Trying for a double play, Posey made a throwing error that allowed Tejada to score the winning run. The Mets had come away with a victory.
