The Mets faced the Cardinals on a Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Pat Zachry pitched a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 Mets win over the Redbirds.
Lenny Randle singled against Cards’ starter Mark Littell to lead off the top of the first inning. Randle stole second base and moved to third on Doug Flynn’s sacrifice bunt. Bruce Boisclair followed with a sacrifice fly that drove home Randle for a 1-0 Mets lead. Littell struck out Steve Henderson to end the inning. Zachry then set down the side in order in the bottom half.
Littell hurled a perfect top of the second. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Keith Hernandez singled and advanced to third base on a single by Jerry Morales. Zachry fanned Ken Reitz and got Mike Tyson on an inning-ending ground ball to third baseman Randle. Pat drew a one-out walk in the top of the third. Randle walked and a wild pitch sent Zachry to third. Flynn was called out on strikes and Boisclair hit a single to score Zachry with the Mets’ second run. Littell fanned Henderson for the inning’s final out. Zachry then shut down the Cardinals in the bottom half.
Littell and Zachry each pitched scoreless and hitless fourth and fifth innings. St. Louis reliever Pete Vuckovich hurled a perfect top of the sixth and Lou Brock walked to begin the bottom half. Brock went to second base on a wild pitch and Jim Dwyer fouled out to catcher John Stearns. Garry Templeton drew a walk and Ted Simmons’ ground out to first baseman Willie Montanez advanced the runners to second and third. Hernandez was walked intentionally to load the bases. Zachry then got Morales to hit a force play grounder to Randle that closed out the inning.
Vuckovich retired the Mets in order in the top of the seventh. Zachry set down all three Redbirds hitters in the bottom half and Boisclair drew a two-out walk in the top of the eighth. Bruce moved to second base on a balk and Henderson went down on strikes for the inning’s final out. Zachry retired the Cards 1-2-3 in the bottom half. Vuckovich then pitched a perfect top of the ninth.
Simmons was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Boisclair to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Hernandez flied out to left fielder Henderson. Zachry then struck out Morales to end the game. The Mets had a series-sweeping victory on Pat’s shutout.
