The Mets and Phillies faced each other on a Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The teams played a three-and-one-half hour game in the cool weather of the early season. Moises Alou hit a pair of home runs to propel the Mets to an 8-1 win.
Tom Glavine and the Phils’ Freddy Garcia each recorded a double play grounder to end a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second, David Wright walked with one out and Alou homered for a 2-0 Mets lead. Glavine shut down the Phillies in the bottom half and the Mets failed to score against Garcia in the top of the third. In the bottom half, the Phils loaded the bases with two outs and Glavine walked Ryan Howard to force home Garcia. Tom then retired Pat Burrell on an infield grounder for the third out.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Glavine singled and went to second on a single by Ramon Castro (who had replaced injured catcher Paul Lo Duca in the fourth.) Carlos Beltran hit a two-out double to score Glavine. With the bases loaded, Phils’ reliever Geoff Geary struck out Wright to end the inning. Glavine then shut down the Phillies in the bottom half despite a double by Jimmy Rollins and a walk to Shane Victorino.
Alou hit a home run off Geary to make it a 4-1 Mets lead in the top of the sixth. The Phils got singles from Wes Helms and Aaron Rowand to begin the bottom half. Glavine got Carlos Ruiz for a double play grounder and retired Jayson Werth on a liner to left fielder Alou. The Mets scored a run against the Phillies’ Francisco Rosario when Jose Reyes came home on Beltran’s groundout in the top of the seventh. Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano then set down the Phils 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Alou and Shawn Green opened the top of the eighth with walks from Phillies’ reliever Matt Smith. Jose Valentin hit a double to score Alou and send Green to third base. With one out, Smith walked Reyes intentionally to load the bases. Castro followed with a single off reliever Ryan Madson, bringing home Green and Valentin with Reyes being out at third on a throw by center fielder Rowand. Madson retired Beltran for the third out and Joe Smith pitched a scoreless bottom half for the Mets.
Madson retired the Mets in order in the top of the ninth inning. Reliever Ambiorix Burgos shut down the Phils in the bottom half to end the game. The Mets had their eighth triumph in their first twelve games of the season. Alou’s slugging provided the spark to victory.
