Reggie Sanders flied out to left fielder Cliff Floyd. Matt Stairs then hit a ground ball to shortstop Rey Sanchez for a double play that closed out the inning.

Wigginton reached on an error by Ramirez that brought home Floyd with the Mets’ third run. D’Amico retired Burnitz on a fly ball to center fielder Kenny Lofton for the third out. Seo then pitched a perfect bottom of the inning.

Seo and D’Amico each yielded three hits in scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Pittsburgh reliever Dennys Reyes set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Seo shut down the Pirates in the bottom half and Alomar walked to start the top of the seventh. Timo Perez reached on an error by Reyes and a one-out single by Piazza off reliever Julian Tavarez loaded the bases. Vaughn doubled to drive in three runs and stretch the Mets’ lead to 6-0. Wigginton got an infield single and Tavarez recorded outs on the next two batters. Seo then kept the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Tavarez retired the Mets in order in the top of the eighth. Mets’ reliever Scott Strickland walked pinch-hitter Abraham Nunez to open the bottom half. Lofton followed with a single to center field. Jason Kendall singled to bring home Nunez with the first Pittsburgh run. Ramirez hit a ground ball to Sanchez for a double play. Graeme Lloyd came in to pitch and got Simon on a grounder back to the mound to end the inning. With one out in the top of the ninth, Piazza homered off Bucs’ reliever Salomon Torres for the Mets’ seventh run. Torres then retired Vaughn and Wigginton for the final two outs of the inning.

Sanders doubled off Mets’ reliever Jason Middlebrook to begin the bottom of the ninth. Stairs grounded out to third baseman Wigginton and Pokey Reese struck out. Jack Wilson singled to score Sanders and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Middlebrook then struck out pinch-hitter Craig Wilson to end the game. The Mets had a series-closing triumph on Seo’s first win in the major leagues.
