April 16, 2008: Homers Lift Mets Over Nats

The Mets faced the Nationals on a Wednesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the second of three games in a series. The Mets hit three home runs in a 5-2 win over Washington.
Cristian Guzman drew a walk against Mets’ starter John Maine to lead off the top of the first inning. Guzman advanced to third base on Ronnie Belliard’s single and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Zimmerman. Nick Johnson walked and Maine retired both Lastings Milledge and Austin Kearns on fly balls to right fielder Ryan Church for the inning’s final outs. With one out in the bottom half, Church homered against the Nats’ Matt Chico to tie the game at 1-1. David Wright flied out to right fielder Wily Mo Pena and a walk to Carlos Beltran ensued. Chico then struck out Carlos Delgado to end the inning.
After scoreless second and third innings, Kearns hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the fourth. Pena singled and Maine set down the next two batters to close out the inning. Chico gave up only a single to Luis Castillo in the bottom half and Maine retired the side on three straight infield ground balls in the top of the fifth. To open the bottom of the inning, Jose Reyes hit a home run that retied the game at 2-2. Church and Wright singled and Beltran followed with a homer to put the Mets ahead by three runs. Delgado went down on strikes and Angel Pagan popped out to second baseman Belliard. Chico then fanned Brian Schneider for the inning’s final out.
Maine yielded just a single to Milledge in the top of the sixth. Nationals’ reliever Jesus Colome gave up only a single to Reyes in the bottom half and Guzman drew a two-out walk against Maine in the top of the seventh. Belliard walked and the Mets’ Joe Smith threw a called third strike past Zimmerman to end the inning. Washington’s Saul Rivera pitched a perfect bottom half and Smith hurled a scoreless top of the eighth. Castillo singled against the Nationals’ Chad Cordero with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Cordero then got pinch-hitter Marlon Anderson on a fly ball to right fielder Kearns for the inning’s final out.
Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner retired Pena on a fly ball to center fielder Beltran to begin the top of the ninth. Johnny Estrada grounded out to third baseman Wright. Wagner then struck out pinch-hitter Aaron Boone to bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory with solid slugging.
