The Mets faced the Braves on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the second of three games in a series. Pedro Astacio pitched a complete game in a 3-1 Mets win over Atlanta.

Astacio and the Braves’ Tom Glavine each started the game by hurling three innings of two-hit scoreless ball. Chipper Jones singled to lead off the top of the fourth. Julio Franco was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Jeromy Burnitz. Chipper Jones advanced to second base on B. J. Surhoff’s ground out to third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo and came home on a single by Vinny Castilla. With Javy Lopez at bat, Castilla got caught by Astacio’s pickoff throw and was tagged out by second baseman Roberto Alomar to end the inning.

Joe McEwing got a single to begin the bottom of the fourth. McEwing moved to second base on Alomar’s sacrifice bunt and Mike Piazza drew a walk. Alfonzo fouled out to left fielder Chipper Jones and a single by Burnitz brought home McEwing with the tying run. Jay Payton flied out to right fielder Surhoff to finish off the inning and Astacio pitched a scoreless top of the fifth. With two outs in the bottom half, Roger Cedeno singled and stole second. Glavine then got McEwing to fly out to Chipper Jones and end the inning.

Astacio retired the side in order in the top of the sixth. Piazza and Alfonzo got back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom half. Burnitz went down on strikes and Payton drew a walk to load the bases. Rey Ordonez reached on second baseman Marcus Giles’ error that allowed Piazza to score and put the Mets ahead, 2-1. Astacio then grounded back to Glavine for the inning’s third out.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Lopez singled and moved to third base on a single by Giles. Pinch-hitter Keith Lockhart went down on strikes and Astacio retired Rafael Furcal on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder Payton. Cedeno hit a single against Atlanta reliever Darren Holmes to lead off the bottom half. McEwing was struck out and Cedeno advanced to third as Alomar reached on shortstop Furcal’s error. Piazza hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Cedeno with the Mets’ third run of the game. Holmes then retired Alfonzo on a ground ball to Furcal that ended the inning.

Astacio yielded just a single to Andruw Jones in the top of the eighth. Braves’ reliever Kevin Gryboski hurled a scoreless bottom half and Castilla grounded out to shortstop Ordonez to begin the top of the ninth. Astacio followed up with consecutive strikeouts of Lopez and Giles to bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory on Pedro’s solid pitching.
