Brewers’ starter Paul Wagner retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. The Mets’ Brian Bohanon pitched a scoreless bottom half and Huskey singled to lead off the top of the second. Carlos Baerga flied out to center fielder Marquis Grissom and a single by Brian McRae advanced Huskey to third base. McRae stole second and Tim Spehr drew a walk to load the bases. Rey Ordonez reached on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt to drive home Huskey and a single by Bohanon plated McRae for a 2-0 Mets lead. Rich Becker to hit a double play ground ball back to Wagner for the inning’s final outs. Bohanon then retired all three batters in the bottom half.
Olerud got a one-out single in the top of the third. Huskey connected for a home run to increase the Mets’ lead to 4-0. Baerga was retired on a fly ball to Grissom. McRae reached on an error by second baseman Fernando Vina and stole second base. Wagner struck out Spehr to end the inning and Vina was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom half. Bohanon then got Jeff Cirillo to ground out to third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo and finish off the inning.
Wagner hurled a perfect top of the fourth. Mark Loretta drew a walk to begin the bottom half. Jeromy Burnitz went down on strikes and Grissom flied out to center fielder McRae. Marc Newfield walked and an errant pickoff throw by Bohanon sent Loretta to third base. Jose Valentin hit a single to bring home Loretta and reduce the Mets’ lead to 4-1. Bohanon then retired Mike Matheny on a pop-up to second baseman Baerga to close out the inning.
Wagner set down the side 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth. Bohanon yielded only a single to Cirillo in the bottom half and Wagner surrendered just a walk to McRae in the top of the sixth. Grissom doubled against Mets’ reliever Turk Wendell with one out in the bottom of the inning. Newfield hit a single and Valentin slugged a three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4. Matheny popped out to catcher Spehr and a single by Wagner ensued. Wendell then got Vina to ground out to Baerga and end the inning.
Alfonzo hit a two-out double against Wagner in the top of the seventh. Against Milwaukee reliever Mike Myers, Olerud homered to put the Mets ahead by two runs. Huskey grounded back to Myers to finish off the inning and Wendell gave up only a walk to Burnitz in the bottom half. Myers pitched a perfect top of the eighth and Matheny singled against the Mets’ Mel Rojas with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter Bob Hamelin then grounded back to Rojas for the inning’s third out.
Brewers’ reliever Alberto Reyes yielded just a single to Ordonez in the top of the ninth. Vina grounded out to shortstop Ordonez to open the bottom half. Cirillo was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Huskey. Rojas then got Loretta to ground out to Alfonzo and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a series-closing victory.
