Willard Hunter

Willard Hunter was a pitcher for the Mets in 1962 and 1964. He pitched 112 innings in 68 games with the team. Hunter had four wins and 62 strikeouts as a Met.

Hunter came to the Mets in a trade with the Dodgers. In '62, he had six starts and 21 relief appearances with the team. Willard made his Mets debut with three innings of relief in a 9-6 Mets loss to the Giants at the Polo Grounds on June 1. At Chicago on June 9, he pitched six innings and got the win in the Mets' 11-6 victory over the Cubs. Hunter was also the starting and losing pitcher in a 5-1 Mets defeat at Chicago in the season finale on September 30.

After spending the 1963 season at AAA-level Buffalo, Hunter served as a reliever with the Mets in '64. He pitched 49 innings for the team during the year. Willard pitched two and one-third hitless innings and got the win in a 4-3 Mets triumph in 10 innings at Cincinnati on July 22. At Shea Stadium on August 23, he was the winning pitcher in the Mets' 2-1 victory in 10 innings over the Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader. Willard also pitched a perfect ninth inning to record a win in the second game of the twinbill as the Mets defeated the Cubs, 5-4. These were the last wins for Hunter as a major leaguer.

In 1965, Hunter pitched in 26 games for Buffalo to conclude his career.
