Dorrel "Whitey" Herzog was a coach for the Mets in 1966. He was the team's third base coach in Wes Westrum's only full season as Mets manager. Herzog also served as the Mets' Director of Player Development from 1968 to 1972.

Following an eight-year playing career, Herzog spent a season on the coaching staff of the Kansas City Athletics. He joined the Mets' staff the following year and quickly moved into a higher position with the team. In his role as director, Whitey oversaw the Mets' development into a pennant contender and championship team.

Herzog became the manager of the Texas Rangers in 1973. Despite his dismissal during the year, he began a successful 18-year career as a major league manager in which his teams won 1,281 regular season games. Whitey led the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals to three division titles apiece and guided the Redbirds to three National League pennants and a World Championship. In 1985, Herzog became the second major league manager (after Sparky Anderson the previous year) to win 100 games in a season with teams in both leagues.

Herzog was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
