The Mets attempted to solidify their infield following the 1992 season. The team acquired shortstop Tony Fernandez from the Padres. Pitcher Wally Whitehurst and outfielder D. J. Dozier were sent to the San Diego team. To complete the deal, catcher Raul Casanova went to the Padres on December 7.
During the 1980s, Fernandez was a four-time Gold Glove winner with the Toronto Blue Jays. He had been a part of two division championship teams with the Jays. Tony also played in four All-Star Games, the last of which was as a Padre in '92. Whitehurst had 11 wins and a 3.83 earned run average in 127 games for the Mets over four seasons. Dozier hit .191 in 25 games as a Met in '92. Casanova was at the Single-A level.
Fernandez played in 48 games for the Mets in 1993. He batted .225 and drove in 14 runs while dealing with illness. Tony was dealt back to his original Toronto team in June of '93.
Whitehurst had a pair of 4-7 won-lost records with the Padres in 1993 and 1994. He compiled a 4.24 ERA in 34 games with the San Diego team. Dozier and Casanova never played for the Padres.
