Wally Whitehurst was a pitcher for the Mets from 1989 to 1992. He had a 3.83 earned run average in 310 innings pitched during his four seasons with the team. Whitehurst won 11 games and had 212 strikeouts as a Met.
Whitehurst made his major league debut on July 17, 1989, with an inning of relief against the Astros at Shea Stadium. Wally appeared in 38 games in relief in 1990, during which he recorded two saves in May and a win in the Mets' 9-8 victory at Atlanta on July 5. For the '90 season, Whitehurst struck out 46 batters while walking only 9.
In 1991, Whitehurst started 20 of the 36 games in which he pitched. He had 7 wins and got credit for a save on September 12 with three innings of one-hit relief at Chicago. On June 29, Wally teamed up with Jeff Innis and Alejandro Pena for a combined 5-0 shutout win over the Phillies at Shea Stadium. He also pitched eight innings of four-hit ball in a 5-1 victory at Montreal on July 4.
Wally pitched in 44 games for the Mets in 1992. He was the winning pitcher in a 12-1 rout of the Reds at Shea on August 28 and pitched three hitless innings of relief to record the win against the Expos on September 19 at Shea. Following the season, Whitehurst was traded to the San Diego Padres.
Whitehurst pitched two years in San Diego and one with the New York Yankees to finish his major league career.
