Vern Hoscheit

Vern Hoscheit was a member of the Mets' coaching staff from 1984 to 1987. He served as bullpen coach during a productive era in team history. The Mets won 388 games and a World Championship during Hoscheit's four seasons on the staff.
Hoscheit had a 12-year career as a minor league player. He was a catcher in the Yankees' system from 1941 to 1955 with two years missed due to World War II military duty. After his playing career, Vern became a minor league general manager and the last president in the history of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa (Three-I) League. He later became a minor league instructor for the Baltimore Orioles and joined their coaching staff in 1968.
From 1969 to 1974, Hoscheit was a coach for the Oakland Athletics. The team won four American League West Division titles and three World Series during this period. Vern also served as a coach for the California Angels in 1976.
In 1983, Hoscheit was the manager for the Mets' affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He joined the parent club the following season with new manager Davey Johnson and other new coaches. The Mets then began an unprecedented period of success.
Hoscheit served as a minor league catching instructor for the Mets in 1988. He then retired to his home in Nebraska. On June 11, 2007, Vern passed away at the age of 85.
