Tom O'Malley was an infielder for the Mets in 1989 and 1990. He played in 91 games and batted .250 with the team. O’Malley had 51 total bases as a Met.
After seven years in the major leagues, O’Malley joined the Mets in March of 1989. He spent the ’89 season with the AAA-level Tidewater team in Norfolk, Virginia before joining the Mets in September. Tom’s first hit as a Met was a pinch-hit, two-run single in the team’s 10-4 win at Philadelphia on September 13. He drove in the Mets’ last run at Shea Stadium for the 1980s with a double that scored Craig Shipley in a 5-3 loss to the Phillies on September 27. O’Malley had a two-run single in the Mets’ 7-0 win on September 29 at Pittsburgh. One day later, he doubled home two runs in the 11th inning as the Mets defeated the Pirates, 7-2.
In 1990, O’Malley had 27 hits during the season. He homered three times and drove in 14 runs. At Los Angeles on May 21, Tom hit a two-run double in a 12-3 Mets win over the Dodgers. He homered in the 11th inning to give the Mets a 6-5 victory over the Expos on June 5 at Shea. O’Malley had three doubles and three RBIs in a 19-8 Mets win at Chicago on June 12. At Wrigley Field the next day, he singled and homered in the Mets’ 15-10 win over the Cubs. Tom had two singles, a double and two runs scored in a 10-1 Mets win over the Cardinals at Shea on July 27. He also had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the Mets’ 3-2 loss on August 17 at San Francisco.
O’Malley played professional baseball in Japan from 1991 to 1996. He also played in two games with the Atlantic League’s Newark Bears in 1998.
