Tom McCraw was a coach for the Mets from 1992 to 1996. He was the team’s hitting instructor. McCraw served as a staff member for three managers with the Mets.

As a player, McCraw had a .246 batting average in 13 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and California Angels. He had 75 home runs and 404 runs batted in during his career. In 1973, Tom became the first designated hitter ever for the Angels.

Between 1975 and 1991, McCraw was a coaching staff member for the Indians, Giants and Orioles. During his five years in New York, the Mets’ team batting averages improved with each season. The hitters had progressive marks on .235, .248, .250, .267 and .270 between ’92 and ’96.

From 1997 to 2000, McCraw was the hitting instructor for the Astros. The Houston team won three division titles with Tom on the staff. McCraw coached for the Expos in their final three seasons in Montreal. He also served on their staff in their first year as the Washington Nationals in 2005.
