Sherman Jones

Sherman “Roadblock” Jones was a pitcher for the Mets in 1962. He appeared in eight games with the team. Jones pitched 23 and one-third innings and recorded 11 strikeouts as a Met.

Jones came to the Mets from the Cincinnati Reds in the expansion draft on October 10, 1961. He split the ’62 season between the Mets and the team’s AAA-level affiliate in Syracuse.

On April 13, 1962, Jones was the starting pitcher for the Mets in their first home game ever. He was tagged with the loss in a 4-3 defeat to the Pirates at the Polo Grounds. Sherman got a single for the Mets’ first home hit in the third inning of the game.

From 1962 to 1965, Jones continued to pitch in the Mets’ minor league system. He appeared in a total of 52 games with the team’s affiliates in Raleigh (A) and Buffalo (AAA).
