The Mets faced the Pirates on the final Sunday of the season. Although they had clinched the East Division title four days earlier, the Pirates had their regular starting lineup to bat against Tom Seaver. The Mets came away with a 3-1 win as Tom pitched a one-hitter over the division titlists.

Seaver retired the first 18 Pittsburgh batters of the game. In his six perfect innings, Tom recorded ten strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Mets got singles from Ken Singleton in the first and from Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee in the fifth that scored a run each against Pirates' starter Steve Blass.

In the seventh, Seaver walked Dave Cash to start the inning. Vic Davalillo followed with a single to send Cash to third base. A sacrifice fly by Al Oliver brought home Cash before Tom got Willie Stargell to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Pirates went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Seaver had a complete game in which he faced only 28 batters for his 19th win of the season. It was also Tom's third one-hitter of his career.
