The Mets and Expos played on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams completed a three-game series after splitting the first two games. Sid Fernandez pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters as the Mets defeated Montreal, 1-0.
Fernandez recorded two strikeouts in each of the first three innings. He retired the Expos in order in the first and second and allowed a single to Tim Wallach in a scoreless third. Sid fanned Moises Alou to begin the fourth inning, which included a single by Greg Colbrunn and a line drive from Spike Owen that left fielder Daryl Boston turned into a double play. Meanwhile, the Mets got a run in the bottom of the second on Ryan Thompson’s two-out single that scored Jeff Kent.
From the fifth inning to the seventh, Fernandez and Montreal starter Ken Hill each pitched scoreless ball. Sid gave up a single, recorded two more strikeouts and got Gary Carter for a double play grounder that ended the seventh. Hill yielded singles to Chico Walker and Dick Schofield, but no runs to the Mets. Fernandez retired three consecutive Expos hitters after a leadoff single by Ivan Calderon in the top of the eighth. Montreal reliever Sergio Valdez then pitched a perfect bottom of the inning.
Larry Walker singled to begin the top of the ninth. Fernandez followed up by fanning Colbrunn for his tenth strikeout and retiring Owen on a pop-up to shortstop Schofield. Sid then got Wallach on a ground ball to third baseman Bill Pecota for the final out of the game. The Mets had their second win of the weekend series on El Sid’s shutout.
