The Mets and Giants played the latter of a two-game series on a Wednesday afternoon at Candlestick Park. Tracy Stallard pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only five hits. The Mets defeated San Francisco, 4-0.

In the first inning, Ed Kranepool got a one-out single off Giants' starter Gaylord Perry. Kranepool advanced to second base on catcher Tom Haller's passed ball and scored on a single by Joe Christopher. Perry then surrendered a double by George Altman that brought home Christopher and stretched the Met lead to 2-0.

Stallard faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings. In the fourth, Hal Lanier led off with a single for the first San Francisco hit of the game. Haller also singled in the inning, but Tracy struck out Jim Ray Hart and Orlando Cepeda to keep the Giants scoreless.

In the fifth and sixth innings, Stallard recorded three more strikeouts to raise his total for the game to nine. He allowed a one-out single to Cepeda in the seventh before getting Matty Alou to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Mets then scored in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer by Altman.

In the bottom of the eighth, Stallard got Jim Davenport for his tenth strikeout of the game. He then gave up singles to Chuck Hiller and Lanier to put Giant runners on first and third base with two out. Tracy then got pinch-hitter Duke Snider to hit into a force play for the final out of the inning.

Stallard pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to end the game. The Mets had a split of the two games in San Francisco. The shutout was Tracy's 10th, and the Mets 50th, win of the season.
