The Mets and Brewers faced each other on a Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played a three-hour and 15-minute game to conclude a three-game series. The Mets came away with a 4-1 victory on a three-run homer by Jay Payton in the 10th inning.
Mike Hampton and Milwaukee’s Jeff D’Amico each pitched four-hit ball from the first inning to the eighth. The pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts while issuing a total of three walks. The Brewers scored a run when Angel Echevarria came home on an error by Mets’ right fielder Lenny Harris in the top of the first. D’Amico made the 1-0 lead stand up with eight shutout innings.
In the top of the ninth, John Franco pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Payton began the bottom half with a double off Milwaukee reliever Curt Leskanic. Payton went to third on a ground out and Leskanic fanned Mike Piazza. With the Mets an out away from defeat, Robin Ventura hit a double to score Payton with the tying run. Leskanic then retired Benny Agbayani to end the inning.
Armando Benitez set down the Brewers without a run in the top of the 10th. Mike Bordick and Joe McEwing got back-to-back singles off Juan Acevedo with one out in the bottom half. Bubba Trammell was retired on an infield fly and Payton came up to bat. Jay clouted a home run to end the game. The Mets had an exciting extra-inning win.
