Ryan Thompson was an outfielder for the Mets from 1992 to 1995. He had 238 hits in 283 games played with the the team. Thompson hit 39 home runs as a Met.
Thompson came to the Mets with Jeff Kent from the Blue Jays in a trade for David Cone on August 27, 1992. He appeared in 30 games for the Mets over the remainder of the '92 season. Ryan drove in the game's only run with a second-inning single for a 1-0 Mets victory over the Expos on September 20 at Shea Stadium. At Chicago on September 22, Ryan hit his first major league home run (a three-run blast) in the Mets' 8-7 victory over the Cubs. He also had two homers in a 7-6 Mets loss in 10 innings to the Phillies at Shea on September 28.
In 1993, Thompson batted .250 with 11 home runs in his first full major league season. He had 128 total bases during the year. In the ninth inning at Shea on July 28, Ryan got a game-tying single and scored the winning run as the Mets defeated the Marlins, 5-4. This victory ended a 27-game losing streak for winning pitcher Anthony Young. Thompson had two singles, a double and a homer in a 10-3 Mets win at St. Louis on August 1. He also doubled and hit two home runs in the Mets' 9-8 loss at Chicago on September 4.
Thompson played in 98 games, all as a center fielder, in the strike-shortened 1994 season. He had 75 hits during the year, including 33 for extra bases. Ryan drove in three runs with a homer and a double in an 8-2 Mets victory at Houston on April 9. He hit a grand slam off the Braves' John Smoltz in the Mets' 11-4 win at Shea on May 14. Thompson homered and drove in three runs in a 5-4 Mets victory over the Reds on May 28 at Shea. He had a run-scoring single and a three-run triple in the Mets' 11-3 win at Colorado on June 6. Ryan also had a double and three singles in the Mets' 11-3 win at Florida on June 18.
Ryan began the 1995 season on the disabled list with an injured right elbow. In his first game back on May 30, he hit a two-run single in the Mets' 8-0 win over the Padres at Shea. Thompson homered in the Mets' 9-6 victory at San Francisco on June 8. On July 14, he had a run-scoring single and a two-run homer in a 13-4 Mets victory at Shea over the Rockies. Ryan also had three RBIs with a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer in a 6-5 Mets win at Montreal on September 9.
On March 31, 1996, Thompson was traded to the Cleveland Indians with Reid Cornelius for Mark Clark. After one season in Cleveland, he played for the Astros, Yankees, Marlins and Brewers. Ryan ended his career in 2002.
