Rod Kanehl

Rod Kanehl was an infielder and outfielder for the Mets from 1962 to 1964. He batted .241 in 340 games as a member of the team. Nicknamed Hot Rod, Kanehl had 103 runs scored and 47 runs batted in during his three-year career.
As a rookie for the Mets in their inaugural season of '62, Rod played every position on the field except for pitcher and catcher. At the plate, he got his first major league hit with a single at Pittsburgh on April 21 and his first RBI against the Phillies on April 27. Kanehl also hit the first grand slam in Mets history in the team's 10-3 win over the Cardinals at the Polo Grounds on July 6.
Kanehl was the Mets' leader with 6 stolen bases in 1963. For the season, he scored 26 runs and had 46 hits. Rod scored the winning run in the 10th inning in the Mets' 2-1 victory over the Pirates in a doubleheader opener at the Polo Grounds on June 2. Against the Braves on June 5, he had two singles in the Mets' 7-run sixth inning and singled to drive home the tying run in the eighth before Milwaukee came away with a 10-inning victory. Kanehl hit his only homer of the year against the Dodgers on August 16.
In 1964, Rod hit .232 in 98 games played. He singled to drive home the Mets' first two runs in a 6-0 win over the Pirates for the team's first victory ever at Shea Stadium on April 19. Against the Cardinals on May 10, Kanehl homered in the eighth inning off Roger Craig to put the Mets ahead to stay in a 4-1 win in Game 1 of the first doubleheader at Shea. Kanehl had a pinch-hit two-run single in an eventual 6-5 Mets victory over the Cubs in a twinbill opener at Shea on June 9. At St. Louis on October 4, Rod got a run-scoring single in his final major league at bat.
