On September 1, 1970, the Mets acquired pitcher Ron Herbel from the Padres. The deal was for a player to be named later. After finishing the season with the Mets, outfielder Rod Gaspar was sent to San Diego on October 20 to complete the trade.
Herbel pitched in 12 games for the Mets in the final month of the '70 season. He had two wins, a save and a 1.38 earned run average. Ron was dealt to the Braves for Bob Aspromonte the following December 1.
Gaspar played in a total of 49 games for the Padres in 1971 and 1974. He had five singles in 31 at bats with the San Diego team.
