Rod Gaspar was an outfielder for the Mets in 1969 and 1970. He played 129 games for the team and got 49 hits. Gaspar also had 30 runs scored and 8 stolen bases as a Met.

Gaspar made his major league debut in the Mets' starting lineup for the season opener at Shea Stadium on April 8, 1969. In the game, Rod had two singles, one run batted in and a run scored. On May 30, Gaspar homered to ignite a two-out rally in the eighth inning that led to a 4-3 Mets win over the Giants at Shea. This homer was Rod's only one as a major leaguer. At San Francisco on August 30, Rod made a throw from left field in the ninth inning that prevented the winning run from scoring. The Mets went on to defeat the Giants, 3-2, in 10 innings.

In the World Series, Gaspar scored the winning run in the tenth inning of Game 4 against the Orioles. The Mets clinched the World Championship the next day.

Gaspar spent the 1970 season in the minor leagues before playing in 11 games for the Mets in September. On October 20, he was sent to the San Diego Padres to complete an earlier trade for pitcher Ron Herbel. Rod appeared in a total of 49 games for the Padres in 1971 and 1974 to finish his major league career.
