Roberto Hernandez was a relief pitcher for the Mets in 2005 and 2006. He appeared in 89 games with the team. Hernandez had eight wins, four saves and a 2.79 earned run average as a Met.

After 14 major league seasons, Hernandez joined the Mets as a free agent in ’05. He led the teams with 67 relief appearances during the season. At Shea Stadium on April 11, Roberto was the winning pitcher in an 8-4 Mets victory over the Astros in the team’s first home game of the year. He pitched a perfect ninth inning for a save in the Mets’ 7-5 win on May 7 at Milwaukee. Hernandez had two scoreless innings pitched and got the win in a 5-2 Mets triumph at Washington on July 4. He pitched a scoreless tenth inning to get the win in the Mets’ 9-8 triumph over the Nationals on August 20 at Shea. In his final three appearances of the year, Roberto pitched a total of four scoreless innings and recorded a save in each game.

In 2006, Hernandez pitched the first four months of the season with the Pirates. He rejoined the Mets in a trade on July 31. Roberto appeared in 22 games and recorded 15 strikeouts for the Mets in their run to the division title. He also pitched in three games of the National League Championship Series against the Cardinals.

Hernandez split the 2007 season between the Indians and Dodgers to conclude his career.
