Five days before Christmas in 1996, the Mets gave their fans a gift. First baseman John Olerud was acquired from the Blue Jays in exchange for pitcher Robert Person. Olerud was an eight-year major leaguer who had won a batting title and two World Series rings during his days in Toronto. Person had five wins and a 4.07 earned run average over two seasons with the Mets.

Olerud continued to be a high-caliber player for the Mets. He produced 524 hits for a .315 batting average in three seasons with the team. John hit for the cycle in a 1997 game. He also batted .354 in the Mets' Wild Card season of 1999.

Person pitched three seasons as a Blue Jay. He appeared in 61 games and had an 8-13 won-lost record from '97 to '99. Robert compiled a 6.18 ERA with the Toronto team.
