Rick Reed was a pitcher for the Mets from 1997 to 2001. He pitched in 140 games with the team. Reed had 59 wins and 590 strikeouts as a Met.
Reed had pitched eight seasons in the major leagues before joining the Mets. In ’97, he led all Mets pitchers with a 2.89 earned run average. At Shea Stadium on April 22, Rick pitched a complete game and hit a run-scoring double in a 7-2 Mets win over the Reds. He had an RBI double and pitched eight innings for the win in a 15-2 Mets victory at Cincinnati on April 28. Reed pitched all nine innings in the Mets’ 3-2 win over the Braves on June 23 at Shea. He hit a two-run homer and hurled eight innings for the win in a 5-3 Mets triumph over the Reds at Shea on July 19. Rick struck out nine batters and was the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 9-5 victory over the Expos on September 11 at Shea. He also pitched eight and two-thirds innings for the win in a 2-1 Mets triumph at Florida on September 21.
In 1998, Reed had a team-leading 212 and one-third innings pitched. He had 16 wins during the season. Rick hit a two-run homer and pitched seven scoreless innings for the win in a 2-1 Mets victory over the Cubs at Shea on April 15. He had nine strikeouts in seven innings and got the win in a 3-2 Mets triumph over the Brewers on May 22 at Shea. Reed had a run-scoring single and struck out ten batters in a three-hit shutout for a 3-0 Mets win over the Devil Rays at Shea on June 8. He pitched eight scoreless innings for the win in the Mets’ 4-0 victory over the Pirates on July 21 at Shea. Rick had a complete game win in a 2-1 Mets triumph over the Dodgers at Shea on August 1. He also recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings for the win in the Mets’ 5-4 victory over the Cardinals in the second game of a doubleheader on August 20 at Shea.
Reed pitched in 26 games in 1999. He had an 11-5 won-lost record and 104 strikeouts in the Mets’ Wild Card season. At Florida on April 6, Rick had six innings pitched and got the win in a 12-3 Mets triumph over the Marlins. He pitched eight innings for the win in an 11-3 Mets victory at Cincinnati on June 15. Reed hurled six and one-third innings and was the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 10-2 triumph at Atlanta on June 25. He had a two-run single, struck out twelve batters and pitched a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 Mets victory over the Pirates on October 2 at Shea. In Game 3 of the National League Division Series on October 8, Rick pitched six innings and recorded the win in the Mets’ 9-2 triumph over the Diamondbacks at Shea.
In the 2000 season, Reed pitched in 30 games and chalked up 121 strikeouts. He won 11 games in the Mets’ pennant-winning year. At Shea on April 7, Rick struck out seven batters in seven and two-thirds innings pitched for the win in a 2-1 Mets victory over the Dodgers. He had seven innings pitched and got the win in a 7-3 Mets triumph at Milwaukee on June 18. Reed hurled seven scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher in the Mets’ 4-0 triumph at Atlanta on July 22. He pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win in a 1-0 Mets victory over the Astros on August 30 at Shea. Rick also had eight innings of four-hit ball and recorded the win in the Mets’ 6-2 triumph over the Braves at Shea on September 27 that clinched the National League Wild Card for the team.
Reed had 134 and two-thirds innings pitched for the Mets in 2001. He compiled a 3.48 ERA with the team during the season. On April 5, Rick had a two-run single and pitched a complete game three-hitter in the Mets’ 7-1 win at Atlanta. He hurled eight scoreless innings for the win in a 1-0 Mets victory over the Padres at Shea on May 15. Reed pitched a four-hit shutout in a 9-0 Mets triumph at Philadelphia on June 5. He also had eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched for the win in the Mets’ 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays on July 15 at Shea.
On July 30, 2001, Reed was traded to the Twins. He concluded his career with the Minnesota team in 2003.
