Richie Ashburn was an outfielder for the Mets in 1962. He batted .306 with 7 home runs and 28 runs batted in with the team. Ashburn was the Mets' first member of a National League All-Star team in '62.
As a Met, Ashburn played the final 135 games of his major league career. He led the team with 81 walks and 12 stolen bases in the '62 season. In the Mets' first game ever on April 11, Richie was the team's first batter and scored their first run in an 11-4 loss at St. Louis. He singled and hit two home runs in a 13-2 Mets win over the Colt .45s at the Polo Grounds on June 23. Ashburn hit .487 (19-for-39) during a 10-game hitting streak from July 22 to August 1. In a game on July 28, he collected four singles in leading the Mets to a 9-8 victory at St. Louis. Richie batted .354 (17-for-48) in a 13-game hitting streak from August 20 to August 31. In the season finale on September 30, he singled for his last major league hit in the Mets' 5-1 loss at Chicago.
Ashburn became a television and radio announcer for the Phillies after his playing career. He remained in the Phils' broadcast booth until his death in 1997. Richie was inducted in the the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
