Red Ruffing

Charles Herbert "Red" Ruffing was a coach for the Mets in 1962. He served under Casey Stengel in the team's inaugural year.
As a pitcher, Ruffing recorded 273 wins with the Red Sox (1924-1930), Yankees (1930-1946) and White Sox (1947) over 22 seasons. He pitched 45 shutouts and posted a 3.80 earned run average. Red struck out a total of 1,987 batters in his career. He also batted .269 with 36 home runs and 273 runs batted in.
Ruffing served as a coach for the Cleveland Indians in 1951. This was his only time on a major league staff before joining the Mets. Red's lone season with the Mets was his last one in Major League Baseball.
Ruffing was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. He died on February 17, 1986.
