Randy Myers was a relief pitcher for the Mets from 1985 to 1989. He recorded 56 saves in 185 game appearances for the team. Myers had a 2.74 earned run average as a Met.
Myers made his major league debut in the Mets’ season finale in 1985. He pitched the final two innings of the team’s 2-1 loss to the Expos at Shea Stadium on October 6. In 1986, Randy appeared in 10 games for the Mets. He struck out 13 batters in 10 and two-thirds innings during the team’s World Championship season.
Randy pitched in 54 games in his first full major league season of 1987. He recorded three wins and six saves for the year. At Shea Stadium on July 1, Myers got his first major league win in the Mets’ 9-6 victory over the Cardinals. He recorded his first save in a 5-1 Mets triumph over the Braves in the second game of a doubleheader at Shea on July 7. Randy struck out six batters in four and one-third innings pitched to earn a win in the Mets’ 9-6 triumph at Houston on July 11. He pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts for a save in a 7-4 Mets win over the Giants on August 20 at Shea. Myers also fanned five batters in two and two-thirds hitless innings to get a save in the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Cardinals at Shea on September 13.
In 1988, Myers became the Mets’ prime lefthanded reliever. He saved 26 games and had a 7-3 won-lost record in the team’s division-winning season. On April 4, Randy got credit for a save in the Mets’ 10-6 victory in the season opener at Montreal. He got his first win of the year in a 6-5 Mets triumph at Cincinnati on April 30. Randy recorded saves in four consecutive relief appearances from May 17 to May 30. On May 31, he got the win in a 5-4 Mets triumph over the Dodgers in 11 innings at Shea. Myers pitched a scoreless 11th inning for a save in the Mets' 9-8 win at Atlanta on July 14. He had five saves in as many games pitched from August 23 to September 5. Randy recorded a save in a 4-2 Mets victory over the Phillies that clinched a tie for the National League East Division title on September 21 at Shea. He also recorded wins in Game 1 and Game 3 of the ’88 National League Championship Series against the Dodgers.
Myers led all Mets pitchers with 65 games in 1989. He struck out 88 batters and had a team-leading 24 saves during the year. In seven consecutive appearances from April 17 to May 9, Randy collected two wins and five saves. He struck out four batters in two innings for the win in a 3-2 Mets victory in 10 innings over the Giants at Shea on May 19. Myers got saves in three appearances against the Cardinals from August 10 to August 13 at Shea. He also had three strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings and got a win in the Mets’ 7-2 victory in 11 innings at Pittsburgh on September 30.
On December 6, 1989, Myers and Kip Gross were traded to the Cincinnati Reds for John Franco and Don Brown. Randy pitched for the Reds in their World Championship season of 1990 and again in 1991. He also pitched for the Padres, Cubs, Orioles and Blue Jays before ending his career in 1998.
