Paul Wilson was a pitcher for the Mets in 1996. He had 26 starts in as many games during his lone season with the team. Wilson recorded five wins and 109 strikeouts as a Met.
Wilson was taken by the Mets with the first overall pick in the 1994 draft. He pitched in 37 games in the Mets’ minor league system before starting the ’96 season in New York. At Shea Stadium on April 22, Paul pitched eight innings of three-hit ball and got his first major league win in the Mets’ 5-1 victory over the Reds. He had eight shutout innings to earn the win in a 1-0 Mets triumph over the Giants at Shea on May 30. At Atlanta on June 4, Wilson had a run-scoring single and was the winning pitcher as the Mets defeated the Braves, 12-6. He pitched eight innings and recorded the win in a 4-1 Mets victory over the Expos on July 20 at Shea. Paul also had eight innings pitched for the win in the Mets’ 5-2 triumph at Philadelphia on September 20. In the fifth inning of this game, he hit his first major league home run to break a tie and put the Mets ahead to stay.
Due to an injured right shoulder, Wilson’s pitching time was limited to 17 minor league games in 1997 and 1998. He sat out the entire 1999 season. In 2000, Paul was traded to the Devil Rays in a four-player deal. He had a 15-25 won-lost record in three seasons with the Tampa Bay team. Wilson pitched for the Cincinnati Reds from 2003 to 2005. He concluded his career in the Reds’ minor league system in 2006.
