As the Championship Series shifted to Shea Stadium, the Mets had Al Leiter on the mound in search of their first win. Unfortunately, a pair of first inning errors resulted in a Braves' run that would be the only scoring for either team in the game. The 1-0 loss put the Mets down three games in the Series.
To open the game, Leiter walked Gerald Williams. He then mishandled Bret Boone's grounder to put runners at first and second with none out. With Brian Jordan at bat, Mike Piazza made a wild throw on a double steal that scored Williams and moved Boone to third. Jordan then flied out to center fielder Melvin Mora, who threw home to cut down Boone and keep the score 1-0.
Atlanta starter Tom Glavine made the initial lead stand up. Over seven innings, he struck out eight batters while shutting out the Mets. The Braves' bullpen continued to do so in the final innings and the Mets were on the brink of elimination.
