The Mets made a deal with the Blue Jays during the 1989 season. Mookie Wilson was sent to Toronto in exchange for pitchers Jeff Musselman and Mike Brady. Wilson had become one of the Mets' most notable figures during the 1980s, being a key part of the team's rise to prominance. Musselman had won 20 games in three full seasons with the Jays while Brady was at the single-A level.

Musselman was not as productive with the Mets as he had been with the Blue Jays. He recorded three wins and had a 4.47 earned run average in two seasons in New York to end his major league career. Brady pitched in the Mets' system until 1991 and never reached the majors.

Wilson collected 285 hits and 46 stolen bases in three seasons in Toronto. With the Blue Jays, he became a member of American League East Division championships in '89 and '91.
