Maurice Samuel “Mo” Vaughn was a first baseman for the Mets in 2002 and 2003. He played in 166 games with the team. Vaughn had 29 home runs and 87 runs batted in as a Met.

Vaughn came to the Mets as a free agent after ten seasons with the Red Sox and Angels. In ’02, he accumulated 126 hits for 222 total bases. On April 30, Mo singled three times and drove in a run in the Mets’ 10-1 win at Arizona. He homered in a 2-0 Mets victory at Los Angeles on May 15. Vaughn hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 win over the Yankees on June 16 at Shea Stadium. He doubled and hit a pair of home runs in the Mets’ 6-3 loss to the Braves at Shea on June 26. Mo drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning single for a 3-2 Mets victory over the Reds on July 26 at Shea. He hit a three-run homer in the Mets’ 10-5 triumph at Florida on August 27. Vaughn also had two singles, a pair of two-run homers and four runs scored in an 11-8 Mets defeat at Montreal on September 13.

A severe knee injury limited Vaughn to 27 games played in ’03. He got to bat only 79 times during the season. At Shea on April 4, Mo had two singles and a home run in the Mets’ 4-0 win over the Expos. He singled and doubled twice each and drove in four runs in a 7-2 Mets victory at Pittsburgh on April 17. At St. Louis on April 30, Vaughn homered for his final major league hit in the Mets’ 13-4 loss to the Cardinals. He played the last game of his career two days later as the Mets recorded a 9-3 victory at Milwaukee.
