Mike Fitzgerald

Mike Fitzgerald was a catcher for the Mets in 1983 and 1984. He played in 120 games in his two seasons with the team. Fitzgerald had 89 hits for 115 total bases as a Met.

Fitzgerald was drafted by the Mets in 1978. He reached the major leagues five years later. On September 13, 1983, Mike hit a home run is his first major league at bat in the Mets' 5-1 win at Philadelphia. In his first game at Shea Stadium one day later, he singled in a 2-1 Mets loss to the Cardinals.

In 1984, Fitzgerald emerged as the Mets' full-time catcher. He served as the prime backstop for Dwight Gooden in his Rookie of the Year season. On May 15, Mike had a pair of run-scoring singles in the Mets' 7-6 win at San Francisco. He had a single, two doubles and three RBIs in an 8-6 Mets win at Atlanta on July 12. Mike drove in three runs with two singles and a double in the Mets' 13-3 win at Houston on July 16. He also hit a two-run homer in a 4-3 Mets triumph in 11 innings over the Cardinals at Shea on July 23.

On December 10, 1984, Fitzgerald was traded with Hubie Brooks, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans to the Montreal Expos for Gary Carter. He played 633 games in seven seasons for the Expos. Mike concluded his career with the California Angels in 1992.
