Mel Stottlemyre

Mel Stottlemyre was the Mets' pitching coach from 1984 to 1993. He served as an instructor for manager Davey Johnson during a successful period of time for the team. The Mets had seven consecutive winning seasons with Stottlemyre on the staff.
Stottlemyre pitched 11 major league seasons with the New York Yankees. He had 164 wins and a 2.97 earned run average in his career. Mel also pitched for the American League in four All-Star Games.
In Mel's first year with the Mets, the pitching staff had a collective ERA of 3.60 for the season. It compiled 3.11 marks in both 1985 and the World Championship season of 1986. Mets' pitchers posted a 2.91 team ERA under Stottlemyre in the division-winning 1988 season. The team collected 677 regular and post season wins in its first seven years with Mel as the pitching coach.
From 1991 to 1993, Stottlemyre coached under four different Mets managers. The team fell into a decline, compiling a winning percentage of .429 for the three years. Mel joined the coaching staff of the Houston Astros in 1994. He later coached for the Yankees and Mariners.
