Mel Rojas

Mel Rojas was a relief pitcher for the Mets in 1997 and 1998. He appeared in 73 games with the team. Rojas recorded five wins and four saves as a Met.
Rojas was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Cubs on August 8, 1997. He pitched 26 and one-third innings over the rest of the ’97 season. Mel got his first Mets save by retiring his cousin, Moises Alou, for the final out of a 2-1 victory at Florida on September 21. He also pitched one and two-third innings for a save in the Mets’ 7-5 win over the Pirates on September 24 at Shea Stadium.
In 1998, Rojas pitched in 50 games during the season. He was the winning pitcher in a 5-4 Mets triumph in 10 innings at Cincinnati on April 18. Mel got the win in the Mets’ 8-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on May 6 at Shea. At Philadelphia on May 31, he pitched two scoreless innings for the win in an 8-6 Mets victory. Rojas also recorded a win in the Mets’ 8-6 triumph over the Rockies at Shea on August 18.
Following the ’98 season, Rojas was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Bobby Bonilla. He pitched in 13 games for the Dodgers, Tigers and Expos to conclude his career in 1999.
