Hook and Culp each pitched one-hit shutout ball for the first three innings. The Phillies scored against Jay in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Wes Covington. The Mets tied the game in the bottom half when Tim Harkness nailed a homer off Culp with Frank Thomas on base.
From the fifth inning to the eighth, Hook and Culp again shut down the hitters with each allowing only one hit. In the top of the ninth, the Phils put two runners on base with one out. Hook then struck out pinch-hitter Frank Torre and followed up by getting Tony Taylor on a called third strike to end the inning.
Hook doubled off Philadelphia reliever Jack Baldschun with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Baldschun issued an intentional walk to Charlie Neal before striking out Ron Hunt. Kranepool then hit a double, scoring pinch-runner Rod Kanehl to end the game. The Mets had an exciting win.
