The Mets played their first game ever against the Florida Marlins on a Friday night at Shea Stadium. The National League East Division's newest team faced Dwight Gooden in its premiere visit to New York. Dwight filleted the Fish on four hits in leading the Mets to a 4-0 win.
The Mets scored a run against Florida starter Charlie Hough in the first inning. Vince Coleman led off with a single and moved to second base on Hough's balk. Vince then advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a single by Eddie Murray. The Mets' lead became 2-0 when Joe Orsulak homered off Hough in the bottom of the third.
Gooden made the two-run lead stand up through seven innings. Two singles by Walt Weiss and a double by Dave Magadan were all the Marlins got against Dwight, aside from two walks. In the bottom of the seventh, Howard Johnson nailed a home run after Bobby Bonilla's leadoff single for another two Met runs.
Greg Briley led off the top of the eighth with a single for the Marlins. Gooden retired the next three Florida batters and then got a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game. Dwight had a complete game shutout for a Mets' win in their first game ever against the Fish.
Notes
- This was Gooden's second shutout of the year. His first came in the season opener against Colorado on April 5. It was also Dwight's last shutout as a Met.
