The Mets and Cardinals began a three-game series at Shea Stadium on a Monday night. A crowd of 40,075 was on hand to see an extra-inning game. The Mets came up with a 2-1 win on a home run by Shawn Green in the 11th inning.
Mets' starter Jorge Sosa shut down the Cards through the first four innings. Sosa allowed only three hits and struck out five batters, Meanwhile, the Mets took a 1-0 lead when Carlos Gomez homered off St. Louis starter Mike Maroth in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth, Sosa gave up singles to Adam Kennedy and Gary Bennett to start the inning. After Maroth's sacrifice bunt, Kennedy scored the tying run on an infield ground out by So Taguchi. Maroth then set down the Mets in order in the bottom half and neither team scored in the sixth.
The Cardinals loaded the bases with two out against Mets' reliever Joe Smith in the seventh inning. Pedro Feliciano came on to pitch and got Scott Spiezio on a comeback grounder to end the inning. Feliciano retired the Cards in order in the top of the eighth and Billy Wagner did the same in both the ninth and tenth innings.
Mets' reliever Aaron Heilman struck out Kennedy and Bennett in a scoreless top of the eleventh. In the bottom half, Green led off against St. Louis's Russ Springer. Shawn hit a home run to end the game. The Mets had an exciting victory.
