Jerry Koosman faced the Cardinals' John Curtis in a matchup of lefthanders at Shea Stadium. The Mets defeated St. Louis, 5-1, as Jerry pitched a complete game five-hitter. It was the 100th win for Koosman in his career.

The Mets scored in the first inning. Gene Clines led off with a single and stole second base. He came home on Lou Brock's error of Jesus Alou's fly ball to left field.

In the fourth, Joe Torre singled and Dave Kingman followed with a two-run homer off Curtis to increase the Mets' lead to 3-0. They got two more runs in the seventh when Clines singled home Del Unser and later scored on an infield out.

The Cardinals scored one run in the eighth, but that was all they got against Koosman. Jerry went all-the way, striking out Doug Howard to end the game and bring his victory total to the century mark.
