The Mets and Yankees faced each other on a Sunday night at Shea Stadium. The teams had split the first two games of the three-game weekend series. In the rubber match, the Mets came out with a 3-2 win on Mo Vaughn's eighth inning home run.

Pedro Astacio and the Yanks' David Wells pitched shutout ball for the first four innings. In the fifth, Alfonso Soriano got a two-out single off Astacio to score Rondell White. The Yankees made the score 2-0 in the sixth on Bernie Williams' single that brought home Derek Jeter. Astacio then pitched a perfect seventh inning and Mark Guthrie shut down the Yanks in the eighth.

Entering the bottom of the eighth, the Mets still had not scored against Wells. Roberto Alomar led off the inning with a double and Mike Piazza reached first base on Jason Giambi's error. Vaughn followed with a three-run homer off Wells to put the Mets ahead. Armando Benitez then retired the Yanks in order in the ninth to end the game. The Mets had taken two of the three games in the Subway Series.
