A Saturday crowd of 41,709 was on hand to see the Mets face the Astros at Shea Stadium. Dwight Gooden charmed the Mets' faithful with a well-pitched shutout against the Houston team. The Mets came away with a 6-0 win.

The Mets scored two runs when Garry Templeton homered with Mackey Sasser on base in the second inning. Templeton added a run-scoring groundout in the fourth that brought home Howard Johnson. The Mets had a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mark Carreon reached first base on an error. Johnson then tripled to score Carreon for another Met run. Sasser added a single to score Johnson, increasing the lead to five runs.

Despite his team's deficit, Astros' starter Jimmy Jones came out to pitch the seventh inning. Gooden hit a double off Jones, who was then removed from the game. Daryl Boston followed with another double off reliever Doug Henry, scoring Gooden with the Mets' sixth run.

Gooden retired the Houston hitters in order in the eighth and ninth innings. Dwight got Eric Yelding on a ground ball for the final out of the game. Gooden completed his three-hitter and nailed down the victory for the Mets.
