The Mets and Reds concluded a three-game series on a Wednesday night at Shea Stadium. The game lasted less than two hours as Bob Shaw pitched a six-hit shutout. The Mets defeated Cincinnati, 4-0.

Shaw and Reds' starter Jim Maloney were involved in a pitchers duel through the first seven innings. Bob had kept Cincinnati scoreless on four hits while the Mets got only three singles off Maloney. However, the Mets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Tommy Davis's sacrifice fly that scored Bud Harrelson.

In the top of the eighth inning, Shaw retired the Reds in order for the fourth time in the game. Harrelson drew a one-out walk in the bottom half and came around to score on a double by Ken Boyer. Following an intentional walk to Ed Kranepool, Maloney was replaced by reliever Ted Abernanthy. Davis then connected for a double to bring home two more runs for the Mets.

Pinch-hitter Art Shamsky singled to begin the top of the ninth inning for Cincinnati. After a force play grounder, Vada Pinson hit another single off Shaw. Bob then got Pete Rose to hit into a force play and Tony Perez on a fly ball to end the game. The Mets had a victory on Shaw's complete game shutout.
