The Mets played the Cincinnati Reds on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. After falling behind, the Mets stormed back by scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning to propel them to a 12-6 victory over the Reds.
For the first five innings, Pete Falcone kept the Cincinnati lineup in check with two-hit shutout pitching. The Reds then got five runs in the top of the sixth, wiping out a 2-0 Mets’ lead. Pete was removed from the game before the end of the inning.
The Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Ron Hodges drew a walk to force in a run. Frank Taveras then hit a double to score Steve Henderson and Doug Flynn, tying the game. Richie Hebner added a bases loaded single to bring home pinch runner Sergio Ferrer and Taveras, putting the Mets in front, 7-5.
The scoring continued for New York. George Foster made an error on Willie Montanez’s fly ball to left for another run. Hebner scored on Henderson’s single. Flynn then hit one that rolled to the left-center field wall for an inside-the-park home run, sending home Montanez and Henderson ahead of him. The Mets had scored ten runs in the inning to set a team record.
Foster’s solo home run off Dale Murray in the top of the eighth inning was the last run of the game. Murray then finished with a scoreless ninth and the Mets had a victory on a record-setting night.
