The Mets and Dodgers began a three-game series in Los Angeles on a Monday night. It was a mound duel as Tom Seaver and Don Sutton both pitched shutout ball for nine innings. It was Seaver who came out the winner as the Mets scored a run in the 10th for a 1-0 victory.

Seaver held Los Angeles to four hits and issued only one walk. All of the Dodgers' hits were singles and no Los Angeles runner reached third base in the first nine innings against Tom. Meanwhile, Sutton recorded ten strikeouts and limited the Mets to three hits (all singles) in the regulation nine innings.

In the top of the tenth, Sutton walked Ron Swoboda to lead off the inning. Kevin Collins followed with a single on which Swoboda moved to third. A single by Al Weis ensued to bring home Swoboda with the first run of the game. Sutton then recorded two outs to end the inning.

Seaver walked Ron Fairly to begin the bottom half of the tenth. Pinch-runner Ted Savage moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a groundout to shortstop Weis. Seaver then got pinch-hitter Ken Boyer on a ground ball to second baseman Ken Boswell to end the game. Tom and the Mets had come out on top in a tough battle of pitchers.
