The Mets and Padres began a three-game series at Shea Stadium on a Friday night. Sid Fernandez pitched a three-hit shutout while striking out nine batters and walking none. The Mets defeated San Diego, 3-0.

Fernandez retired the side in order four times in the first five innings. A single by Fred McGriff in the top of the second was the only time a Padre batter reached base. Meanwhile, the Mets got a run in the bottom of the third on Dave Magadan's single that brought home Willie Randolph. They also scored on a two-out single by Howard Johnson on which Fernandez came home for a 2-0 lead in the fifth.

After Sid shut down San Diego on one hit in the top of the sixth, Bobby Bonilla singled off Padres' starter Frank Seminara in the bottom of the inning. Bonilla later scored on a two-out double by Dick Schofield for the Mets' third run of the game. Fernandez then retired the side in order again in the seventh.

In the eighth, Jerald Clark doubled with one out for the Padres' third hit off Fernandez. Sid set down the next two batters to end the inning. He then retired the Padres 1-2-3 for the sixth time to finish off the game. The Mets had a victory on a gem by El Sid.
